See the transformation of a plain, metallic powder into a moist clay-like product that's easy to shape, then dried to a form that can be carved or drilled and, finally, turned back to a piece of pure, solid metal.

On one side, you will use a collage, mosaic, or quilt-like pattern; the other side can be plain, or it can display one overall texture that either complements or contrasts with the collage. Good for beginners, yet those with some experience can learn new techniques.

Often when I schedule workshops, people say, "I'd like to take that one, but can't make it on that date..."

So here's another option: you pick the date! That is, the first few people who express interest in any workshop marked "TBA" will get to pick a date and time that works for them.

A two-for-one special! Bring someone you love, and learn about silver metal clay together. Make a pair of treats to exchange with each other; or, each of you can make a gift for another special someone in your life!

Learn how to make a simple, small, reversible, hollow, silver box-shape pendant.

(In the time allocated, beginners will be able to make a lovely closed-box design. Those who already know how to make such a closed-box out of metal clay will, if they want, have the opportunity to make a trinket box with a loose-fitting lid.)

Make a truly unique fine silver pendant (or focal bead to string later) by learning how to roll and drape thin sheets of "metal clay" ... and then decorate the other side for both added strength and reversibility.

Because of week-night time constraints, this will be an intermediate-level evening: you should have some prior experience with metal clay.

Learn the basics of working with metal clay, including how to form it into a domed shape.

You'll have the choice of designing a piece you'll be proud to wear on its own, or one that you can later string as a focal point in your own beaded creation.

Weave strips and strings of this fabulous fine silver material.

To hold your weave securely, you will then either frame or back it in the shape of your choice to make your own one-of-a-kind pendant.

Learn to work with regular "lump" clay straight from the pack and with the wonderful "flexible greenware" that remains pliable, and thus weave-able, even after it has fully "dried" out.

Make a pair of small earrings that combine your own fine silver elements with a lovely colored Lucite leaf, flower, or butterfly.

Learn to work with Hadar's Metal Clay Powders.

This session is unlike most of my workshops in several ways:

This one is intended for those with some prior metal clay experience.

Bring your own tools.
(You can use the same ones as you use for silver-clay work, but you need to clean them thoroughly as you switch between precious metal clays and non-precious ones. Of course, I will have some tools for folks to use too: just let me know what you may need so I can have them cleaned up in advance!)

Bring your own clay too, if you have it.
(Or, just let me know in advance if you want to buy some in class.)

On the second day, we will attach the elements of our rings, and finish decorating them.

The rings will be fired after class, and returned to Zelda's in about a week.

For those metal clay enthusiasts who've wanted to add some gemstones to your work, this is a great way to start out!

Bring a fired piece of silver metal clay (or other fine silver; not sterling) and learn how to add a small, round cabochon to it.

Sign up early so Carol will have time to talk with you in advance about the options that will be available. (In most cases, materials will come to around $15.)

Once you've mastered these techniques, we can talk about workshops where you will set larger stones and/or those with more complex shapes.

The metal clay phenomenon began with silver, and that's the form we'll use to make a lovely layered pendant.

If you want, it can even be reversible: two looks for the price of one!

In this workshop, you will have the choice
of making a few to connect directly to each other
(for a unique pendant / component) or
of making more links but leaving them separate
(so you can later intermix them with wire and
other elements of your choice).

Learn the basics of working with silver clay,
including how to texture, trim, and form it into twists and spiral shapes.

Make one to three beads in a closed swirl shape, and cap their ends so that, after class, you can string them onto a necklace, bracelet, or earrings.

Those with some previous metal clay experience
will learn new techniques to add to their repertoire,
but this is another great project for beginners!

Some projects may be fired during the session;
others may be fired afterwards and available for pick-up within the next week.

of the "materials" fee: each piece will be wearable when it is picked up.

Advanced finishing / stringing / wiring options will be demonstrated via "samples" in each session.

This is just off Braddock Avenue in Regent Square, a few blocks north of the Edgewood/Swissvale exit (#77) from the Parkway East (I-376). But it's on a one-way street. Turn west at Sanders (closest) or Hutchinson (which has a light); if you've just come fram the Parkway, that'll be a left turn. Then left onto Milton, and left onto Charleston. (Or you may just want to park on Milton.) Take the stairs up to the second floor. (There's no elevator.)
